Common Causes of Back Pain for Skaters

A condition is known as “lordosis” is the most common cause of back pain for skating. Sometimes called swayback, lordosis occurs when the spine’s natural curvature becomes exaggerated, often due to overuse or injury. In turn, one or both hips tend to be pushed forward and your lower back takes on an inward curve.

 When you skate, your gluteal muscles and hip flexors must contract to keep the proper posture. In some cases, these muscles may get overly fatigued from trying to maintain a straight spine while keeping the knees bent toward the chest. If this happens repeatedly, it can lead to low back pain or injury.

“All skaters, no matter what type of skating they do, are at risk for back pain. There is so much dynamic movement involved in most types of skating that people develop muscle tightness or an actual injury to their back. If you have ever landed wrong after being slightly off-balance on your feet, then you know how it feels to have back pain .”

MUSCLE STRAINS

Strains are the most common of all skating injuries. Muscle strains are tears in your muscles caused by overstretching or contracting them too quickly ..

While falls are often responsible for fractures, muscle pulls are more likely to cause back pain among skaters. It’s important to know the limitations of your body so you can work within those parameters. Repeated muscle pulls will cause chronic back pain, even if you’re not skating.

Lower back muscles strain is common with beginners who are new to the sport of roller skating, but it also happens with more experienced skaters. And people develop muscle tightness or an actual injury to their back.

If you experience low back pain while skateboarding or playing any sport, reduce your activity level until the pain goes away. If that doesn’t stop the problem within a few days, see your doctor.

Stress Fractures to the Spine

Skateboarding requires a great deal of balance, which can lead to problems in your upper or lower spine if you don’t have proper posture. Skaters with weak core muscles are particularly at risk for injury since they can’t brace themselves against falls. You can minimize your risk of injury to your spine by strengthening your abdominals, back muscles, and hip flexors. Warming up before you skate is also recommended.

In addition to putting stress on your back when falling, the repetitive twisting motion involved in skateboarding can also lead to a stress fracture of the spine. Stress fractures can be extremely painful and may indicate a problem with your bone health. If you have any sciatic pain while skateboarding or sports, you should stop doing it immediately.

-Your spine consists of both vertebrae and discs. When you have a dislocated vertebra, one disc slips out of position over an adjoining disc. This is a very serious issue and must be treated as soon as possible. 

-A herniated disk can be a painful condition that is tearing through the tissue in your back. If you have a herniated disk, the exterior portion of it can press against a nerve root, which can cause pain in an arm or leg when that nerve is irritated by the herniation. A common cause of herniated disks is a sudden, traumatic event where the spine gets injured.

-A lumbar herniated disc occurs between one of the five lower vertebrae in the lower back, also known as your lumbar spine. It’s been said that this type of injury is more likely to result from physical stress or strain. Resistance training programs that focus on leg exercises are better suited for skaters than static weightlifting exercises.

WHY SKATEBOARDING INJURIES OCCUR

Skateboarders usually attempt to do tricks that are beyond their ability. Even the most skilled skateboarders may fall while attempting new maneuvers. The frequent occurrence of these types of falls is one reason why skaters get injured so often.

DIAGNOSIS AND TREATMENT OF LOWER BACK SKATEBOARDING INJURIES

Rehabilitation exercises are important for the recovery of skaters with injuries to their spine. The abdominal muscles, including the spinal muscles that support your back, are often weak in young people. Skaters should therefore include stomach exercises in their rehabilitation program. For example, they can do “crunches” or “sit-ups.

Sciatica – a medical condition, usually caused by a lumbar disc herniation or spinal stenosis, that is characterized by pain that shoots into the lower extremities along the sciatic nerve.

Skateboarding-related injuries are common occurrences. Many skaters who have had an injury will need to take some time off from skating and follow the RICE method (rest, ice, compression, and elevation) to help them recover. The diagnosis of a muscle strain can usually be made based on symptoms, but if there is suspicion that the spine might need attention too image tests may be necessary.

The key to preventing injury overall is identifying risk factors and individual injury patterns, modifying training when you see warning signs, and getting professional medical treatment with a board-certified orthopedic surgeon or physical therapist to help you work through the pain.

The most reliable way for a skater to prevent back injuries is by strengthening the muscle groups surrounding their spine, which are the core abdominal muscles, glutes, low-back extensors, and hamstrings. It is possible that good posture on the board would also help to protect the back and avoid aggravating previous injuries.

Conclusion:

Some of the common causes of back pain in skaters are listed above, though there are many more that could also be included. Skaters should try to avoid these common causes of back pain, or at least take precautions against them. Otherwise, they are exposing themselves to an increased risk of injury while practicing their sport.
