As a girl (or guy) skateboarder you might feel like you don’t belong in the skateboarding community. People are constantly telling us that “girl skaters suck”, “girls shouldn’t be doing this” and it’s really hard to not let those comments get into your head after a while. I have been skating for 8 years now, and I can’t count how many times someone has told me that girls have no place skateboarding. You are constantly faced with these negative attitudes, but it’s important to remember that you are the only one who decides what you do. If other people don’t think girls should skateboard then their opinions shouldn’t stop you from doing something you love. It’s important to go out and skate with people who are positive about it because the negativity can take a toll on you if you let it.
Be careful of what media outlets tell you about female skaters too. Many major magazines/websites slander us as being “attention whores” or “not doing anything”. I’m not telling you to stop skating for a magazine, or if you do it’s not a bad thing. But I am saying that there are tons of people out there who will try and make girls feel like they don’t belong, and it’s important that we support each other as much as possible.
Either way, good luck with your skating and don’t let anyone stop you from doing something that is a huge part of who you are.
