How to protect stickers on a skateboard?

When you buy the new skateboard there are stickers or brand logos and graphic designs on the board. Most people apply the stickers on their choice. In 1990 the trend of the skateboard stickers declined but it returned with full force in 21 century. 

Stickers make the skateboards  attractive and colorful. But with enhancement in attraction, the stickers also protect the skateboard deck from damage like scratches. So it is important to protect stickers on the skateboard.

Here I will give you some tips to protect your skateboard stickers. But first, it is necessary to know what the skateboard stickers are made up of. Because this information will help you, what should you do to protect the skateboard stickers?

 What are skateboard stickers made of?

The skateboard stickers are three-dimensional holographic polypropylene self-adhesive tags. They have a transparent background and don’t look like the label. Their one-side adhesive so they can stick to any surface. The stickers are printed on the premium vinyl and have the protective layer of the laminate that makes them firm, waterproof, and prevents them from scratching and vanishing.

What should I do to protect the skateboard’s sticker? 

To protect your skateboard stickers you can use these two methods.

  1. Grip tape
  2. Epoxy resin

The epoxy resin is used to protect the bottom stickers of the skateboard. The grip tape is for the top of the skateboard.

1. Protecting the skateboard stickers by using transparent grip tape

Using the grip tape is a better option to protect the skateboard stickers. Some people use sandpaper tape on their board but by this, you can not put any sticker on your skateboard. Without stickers that may be a little bit boring. But if you have the stickers on the board you can use the transparent grip tape. How to use this I will tell in these steps.

Things you need are

  • Transparent grip tape
  • Cutter
  • The skateboard deck
  • Stickers
  • Sandpaper

Clean the skateboard

If your skateboard is new and there is not any sticker on it. You want to put the sticker. firstly you should use sandpaper to clean the skateboard. You can use your palm or the brush. Your skateboard should be so clean that it doesn’t wrinkle the stickers.

Use the clear coat spray

Use the clear coat spray on the skateboard surface. It will give the glassy and shining look to the board. If there is  any graphic design on the skateboard deck, it will seem good with it. If your deck board is painted and it has a graphic, a clear coat will give the strength for a long time. 

Remember one thing, coat the board by keeping your distance from the spray bottle to the board. Because it can make the white dots by direct spraying. You can use any brand of clear coat spray. Some are here

Apply the sticker

If your skateboard has the artwork or graphic on it then the clear coat is okay. But if you want to put the sticker of your choice then use the one-side sticky stickers. Put them in the place where you think they look more attractive and better.

Use the grip tape

Use the transparent grip tape to cover the top of the skateboard. Take the grip tape put it on the skateboard and rub it by the hand to remove the wrinkles. Now take off one side of the tape and stick it to the board. Use your hand palm to rub the tape that it stick completely.

Cut the leftover sides

Now take the knife or any object and rub it at the edges of the board. That the tape attach to the edge perfectly. Now take the cutter and take off the leftover tape.

Now your skateboard stickers are safe. They will never peel off from the board.

It will also protect your skateboard from scratches. 

2. Protecting the stickers by using epoxy resin 

Epoxy resin is used to protect the stickers or artwork on the skateboard. The resin with the skateboard then adds up to the 2 ounces weight. It will be used to protect the bottom stickers of the skateboard.

The things that we need in this

  • Epoxy resin 
  • Hardening agent
  • Skateboard deck
  • Gloves
  •  brush
  • tape

Tape the top of the skateboard

Use sticky tape to cover the top edge line and holes of the deck. It will protect the top part of the board from dripping resin.

Mix the resin with a hardening agent

Take a mixing jar and add an equal amount of both resin and the hardening material. Mix them well

Pour the mixture on the skateboard

Now pour the resin mixture onto the bottom side of the stickers. Make sure that you should have wear gloves. Spread the mixture all over the board by using hand so that all the parts become covered.

Give rest the skateboard 

after fully applying the mixture then cover the board and give it the rest overnight.

Take off the tape

This is the last step, take off the tape from the top side of the board from the edges and the holes. Now drill the holes on the bottom because they become closed due to the resin.

It will look more shiny and smooth. Give it the rest for three days then it will be okay.

Now fix all the bush, wheels, truck, and other accessories. Your skateboard is ready for the ride.

How do you spray paint the grip tape?

If you use the grip tape of one color on the skateboard. It is possible to make the art on it by using spray paint. Take the piece of paper that should be cut in the shape of the design. That may be any letter, word, or flower. But it on the grip tape and cover the exposed sides of the tape with any cardboard box or other thing. Now apply the spray paint to the designed piece of paper. Take  off the paper and remove the covering of cardboard box fromthe tape. And you can see the result in the form of design.

How do I protect my skateboard graphics?

To protect the skateboard graphics you can apply a layer of varnish or sealant. This layer protects the graphics from damage. The color of the graphic does not fad. It is like the protective layer between any harmful effect and the skateboard graphics. You should not expose it to high temperature because by this the graphic becomes adhesive and can takeoff from the skateboard..
